Japan-bloggers United Mailing List?

Ken YN over at WhatJapanThinks has been holding a little Japan Blog of the Year Contest and he brought up some really interesting ideas in the comments section of the post.
Ken YN: I’m not very good at this community thing, but I feel that there should be some sort of J-bloggers United mailing list/SNS where we can get to know everyone a bit better, but without getting too incestuous; the blogging about blogging world is really bad for that!I see Japan Probe has a new AdRoll icon; the Japan BlogAds doesn’t sell anything as a unit; could “we” work out a deal with Piqniq, TokyoApartments, etc so they could advertise direct rather than through the AdSense, TLA middlemen? I don’t, but someone like Robert at jp.blognation may have answers.
Having a Japan-bloggers United emailing list or a J-blogger social networking site (SNS) sounds like a great idea to me. What do you guys think? How should we do it?

If you were going to build a social networking site, you might do it with Elgg, an open source SN platform. It’s mostly used at univeristies (see this list), but anyone can use it.
Some Daily J readers already know about JapanSoc.com, a Digg-style, social bookmarking site for people interested in Japan. It’s still very new, but I encourage everyone to take a look. If you want to build a Japan bloggers’ community, this would be a good place to start.
Oops. For some reason I did not see your comment in moderation until now.
there is a good mashup article about this
I used to have a social networking site that I started for students at my uni. It was running on phpizabi and I have considered starting something like that for j-bloggers.
Dolphin is also a good program (I’ve heard it is better than phpizabi)
There is also a site called mugshot that lets you create a SNS. It is not a site you host but rather a service which I think is better for bringing bloggers together –> If I host the service they will think I am doing it for some personal benefit and might not want to join.
What do you think?
[…] received a very interesting offer in response to the post about a Japan Bloggers United Mailing List (WhatJapanThinks.com’s idea). I should be posting about that […]
