Post #1 of “The Japan-related Web” guest blogging series on Rising Sun of Nihon

On January 06, 2008 in #The Japan-related Web Debate, Community building, DailyJ Mission, Future of the J-web

And so it begins…

As I mentioned earlier, Bill from Rising Sun Of Nihon has invited me to use his blog as a platform where we can all come together and discuss the Japan-related web! This will be a month long guest blog series.

I am going to be putting snippets of the posts here but most of the action will be over on Rising Sun Of Nihon. Be sure to”weigh in” on the topics by commenting and sharing your ideas.

Here is a snippet from my introduction:

I started building websites related to Japan while studying at Sophia University in Tokyo. I started because I was a bit overwhelmed (like many are) by the difficulties of trying to live/succeed as a foreigner in Japan and I wanted to make things a little easier for others…

I believe that communication and collaboration between webmasters (and between webmasters and their readers) is the key to better Japan-related content on the web.

So, I am very grateful and excited that Bill has given me the chance to guest blog here on RisingSunOfNihon and chat with all of you!

You can read the full at RisingSun.

Be sure to introduce yourself as well in the comment section! This is your discussion.

  1. Chris B Said,

I tried to leave a message over there but I kept getting errors?
I think you should try an build a site like Nick’s with a little more “content oversight” or an “Editors Picks” section.

  2. Nick Ramsay Said,

I just commented there but didn’t see anyway to subscribe to comments. I’m not sure how much of a conversation we can have if we’re not notified of replies.

  3. Nick Ramsay Said,

Chris, I’ve opened the “upcoming” page on JapanSoc, so any new submissions will need at least one vote from someone else before they hit the front page. That should help somewhat, and I’ll increase the number of votes needed to get “published” as the site grows.

  4. The Chemist Said,

    @ Chris
uh oh. That’s not good. If you comment has links I know it goes into moderation, but that is not what you are talking about. That’s not good. I will mention that to Bill and see what he says.

Did it give you any information about the error? (Like an error code or something?)

    Also,
I could start a site like Nick’s but I would much rather contribute to his.
I actually started working on a site similar to it, running on the same software, but it was too much to deal with on top of the projects I am already doing. Also I wanted to build up a community around the idea of a Japan-related web first.
I have a bit of a community now and he has the time (I hope) to run a digg-like site so I figure why not work together.

I hope that other people will support the project too. I think Nick is open to listening to users like you and me (and if a webmaster does not listen to the users the site suffers, so he had better listen :) ).

Let’s give him an chance and if he pisses us off then we’ll make our own ;)

  5. The Chemist Said,

    @ Nick
See how silly I am here at DailyJ? :)

That is a good point about comment notification. I think RisingSun is powered by movable-type. But Bill might have to go through KnowMoreMedia (his blog network) if he wants to add any plugins. I will ask him about it.

Also I think using the upcoming page to “moderate” content on JapanSoc is a good solution. It makes me happy (we will have to see what Chris thinks though. I always make it a point to listen to feedback even if it is negative, because I bet there are probably others thinking the same thing as Chris but he’s the only one that will tell you. That’s why I like about him).
Increasing the threshold as the site grows sounds like a great idea too. Keep up the good work! The J-web needs its own digg.

  6. The Chemist Said,

    Oops. I almost forgot.
Nick, I replied to your comment over at RisingSun.
But it might still be in moderation (it included links).

I just emailed Bill about comment notification. Thanks for bringing that up! I owe you one.

  7. Nick Ramsay Said,

Thanks Chemist. You’re right. Chris, keep the feedback coming. I’m watching over the site as often as I can to keep it in order and hope it can avoid any of the pitfalls that cause sites like JapanSoc to fail before they get out of the gate. But do let me know if something is no good.

  8. Bill Said,

I am sorry for the lack of comment notification.
As was pointed out, I am part of a larger network, KMM and there are hoops to jump through to get things like that done.

As I write, the KMM network is migrating all of its content from MT to WordPress, because of the inability to have such things as comment notification.

I wish the migration had occurred before this series started. My sincere apologies.

Still, I have contacted our tech people to see what/if anything can be done in the meantime.

Chris, I don’t know why you couldn’t leave a reply. Did you get some sort of error message that I can pass on to our tech ppl?

Japansoc is a great idea that is long overdue. I started a simliar project last year called Nippondit, but ran out of time and steam with too many other things going on.

I’m happy to support the efforts of Japansoc.

  9. The Chemist Said,

    Hi Nick,

I asked Bill about comment notification and he told me that Movable Type doesn’t have a notification plugin :(
Actually the blog network that he blogs for is in the process of migrating to wordpress, but that won’t help us any now.

I wonder if there is a work-around. What do you think?

Maybe if there is a separate RSS feed for comments…
    I don’t know.

  10. Chris B Said,

    @Nick,
Bro you are doing a fantastic job! I believe in throwing 100 ideas against the wall and seeing which ones stick. I think the upcoming section is a genius stroke. Great idea!!

  11. The Chemist Said,

    @ Bill,

    Nippondit.com
    Ahh. Another pligg powered site!

I threw in my towel too. We had been working on a site called Japandigger to go along with Nipponster.

Actually, Nipponster is a bit like a cross between Digg.com and Google now. Users can comment on the search term or even the individual results. They can also vote (+ or -) for the results that they like the best. It is “social” search.
I think it is a little difficult for people to understand though so it has been slow to catch on.

  12. Bill Said,

    Nick.
A work around….co,comments might be an option.

    Sorry for the hassle.

  13. The Chemist Said,

    @Bill

Wow! This is a neat way to track comments. It even let’s you make an RSS feed of all the comments you are tracking and the feed displays any new replies (if I am understanding correctly)

http://wiki.co.mments.com/Introduction Teaches you how to use it.

  14. Bill Said,

Hopefully co.comments will keep us in touch until we can get the auto sender installed AFTER we migrate to WP which is supposed to happen this month….

Our network KMM is combining with the b5media network of Problogger and Copyblogger, et al, fame.

Growing pains. But, it’s better to have growing pains (except around the midsection) than dying pains.

  15. The Chemist Said,

Ok. I summed up the steps you will need to take to use this co.mments method.

  16. The Chemist Said,

    @ Bill,

That sounds exciting! It sounds like KMM is moving up.
