So what’s happening on your side of the J-web?
On August 08, 2008 in Uncategorized
Even when I was to busy to do DailyJ I had been keeping up some of what was going on around the Japan-related web.
There are some great things happening with the Japansoc community blog and BillyWest’s JapanBlogger.net, and in general it seems like a community is solidifying. Good news indeed!
So, how about it? What’s happening on your side of the Japan-related web?

Not really exciting, but I’ve set up a test site so I can upgrade JapanSoc to the latest version of Pligg without anyone knowing… oops! It’s crazy that you can upgrade Wordpress in less than an hour, but I’ve spent a week so far on this upgrade and I’m nowhere near finished. The reason for the difference is that with Wordpress, you never need to touch the core files, you only edit the theme and use plugins. Modifying Pligg, on the other hand, means editing core files, so when it’s time to upgrade you have to edit them again, and hope they still work! I guess that’s what you get for using software in “beta”.
uh oh. the cat is out of the bag now
I know what you mean about the updgrade. Wordpress has us very spoiled. Its so easy to upgrade, just save the old wp-content folder.
I’ve never upgraded pligg before and if it takes a week I don’t want to. We’ll have to give you a medal when you’re done!
Hi,
I just stumbled upon this site while I was searching for more info on Japan. I can tell that you really like it out there… I am very interested in moving over there for a while but I need to know a bit more about it before I take such a big leap.
Is there any information or tips that you can offer me, as far as work and general life is concerned in Japan. Where are the best places to work, to live, to enjoy life?
Thank you for taking the time out to read this.

Hi Kia,
Sorry for the slow reply. It is comments like yours (and being about to give someone info that might be useful) that make blogging worthwhile!
As far as general life in Japan goes, the best advice I can give you is “Get and stay outside of your comfort zone, and enjoy it”
The real learning begins when you try things you’ve never tried and go places you’ve never been. Try not to end up in a foreign bubble, where you are with other foreigners all the time.
You are going in the right direction by searching around on the internet and asking questions. There are a lot of really good blogs/sites out there.
For general Japan info/stories JapanNewbie.com comes to mind, although that is just one of many.
Much depends on where you will be living in Japan, what sort of job you are interested in, etc.
A great resource for any question you might possibly have is Jref.com, they have a great forum with many helpful members. Also you can ask bloggers, like you already are.
As for jobs, there is Gaijinpot.com which lists job openings in Japan. It is also good for general info on jobs, visa, and housing. But if you want personal stories search for bloggers who write about their job experiences.
I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions. And thanks for commenting!
