Nerd debate

On October 22, 2008 in Nerd Rant, fun

I was replying to comments and clearing my inbox today and I noticed fellow J-web buddy Nick wrote up a little post about his top 10 most used computer programs. I have been trying to coax him over from the evil microsoft empire for a little while now so it was good to see some open source software on the list.

Of course I had to tease him about WindowsMail though… (I bet he hates me now :) )

He knows I love him though.

I thought I’d make this post just in case Nick needs to release some steam and post a rebuttal comment :)

Also I wanted to say that I’m not alone, Jdonuts also said goodbye to windows. Linux J-webbers unite!

  1. Jonadab the Unsightly One Said,

Windows Mail, ugh. I remember that horrific monstrosity from the second computer I ever owned. It came with Windows 95 OSR2 pre-installed, including Windows Mail and News. (This was back when usenet was still a significant part of the internet. Remember that?)

It took me about two minutes to determine that I couldn’t make myself use that, so I promptly went and downloaded Pegasus Mail, and then I went looking for a halfway-decent newsereader, eventually settling for Forte Free Agent.

Of course these days I use Gnus. I got tired of having to reboot to get into WIndows 95 every time I wanted to check my email. (My original plan was to use multiple OSes on a daily basis, but the Linux system proved to be more convenient, and I ended up using it for pretty much everything.) If Pegasus Mail had been available in a Linux version, I’d probably still be using it.
