How to win $50 in BaBiBuBeBo’s Japan Photo Contest
On February 26, 2008 in On the J-web, fun

Hi there all you photography enthusiasts! I have a fun opportunity for you.
Evan Pike from Japan Photo Guide (also known as BaBiBuBeBo.com) emailed me and asked me to post something about his contest. Evan was a schoolmate of mine at Jyochi U. but I would have posted something for him either way. DailyJ is all about Japan-related news. Friendship just lubricates the process
The contest will only run until March 17th so you’ll have to hurry! Anyone can enter and the details are all on his blog in the post Contest: Easy Way to Win $50 from Japan Photo Guide
And hopefully we will be hearing a lot more from Evan soon
(as soon as I stop being lazy and send him those interview questions)
Thank yous and lots of Japan-related web activity!
On February 17, 2008 in #The Japan-related Web Debate, Community building, On the J-web
It’s time for me to thank some generous fellow Japan-bloggers who’ve made some nice things for me. I’m really grateful for the great crowd here at DailyJ. You’re alway so supportive. You guys are the best!
There has been a lot of love going around on the Japan-related web lately. Starting with KenYN’s contribution to the JapanSoc project, other bloggers have come along and contributed to several projects. Deas from RockingInHakata created some great OSX widgets for the Mac lovers out there (one day I hope to be cool enough for a Mac
). He made one for JapanSoc and another for Nipponster.com. Thanks for the widget, Deas!
The JapanSoc project has been getting better and better, which is really exciting. Nick recently posted a “JapanSoc Toolbox” on his blog LongCountDown. The toolbox is a list of all the great gadgets for JapanSoc, like gadgets to help you submit your posts to JapanSoc and boost traffic to your blog.
But as busy as he has been with JapanSoc he made time to contribute some great new logos to the community-owned wiki, Japanopedia. Thanks Nick! They look good to me (you can see them below). Now the wiki won’t look so ugly
These are just a few of the thank yous that deserve a mention. And which so much activity I’m sure there will be many more thank yous to come.

Need a good laugh?
On February 13, 2008 in On the J-web
Hello there.
I need a little time to get on top of the things that need work around here, so I thought I’d leave you a short fun post to keep you occupied.
In the mean time I will work on replying to some DailyJ emails, replying to comments, fixing a Japanopedia problem, and readying some upcoming interviews.
Enjoy!
When?

Chris B Said,When lord…will a site be made that is teacher friendly?
All the forums are littered with flamers and snobs. The Soc is great but not for English teachers. If you didn’t know it you would think none of these people teach? Do they? What is it like to get paid to do a job and NOT want to be the best? I must be extremely competitive because I can’t even imagine not wanting to be #1??
Where are the sites showcasing ESL classes? Why no websites competing over which teacher can get the most students with high scores on the Eiken? Where have all the teachers gone?
Connections On The J-web
On January 21, 2008 in Community building, DailyJ Mission, On the J-web
The last time I did a “connections” post was December 5th, so this is much over due.
It’s time to talk a look at what some of the past DailyJ interviewees have been up to and see if we can find connections. I just mentioned on The Japan-related Web series how connections may become opportunities for webmasters to collaborate. I don’t know if these connections will lead to that, but at least I hope they are fun.
Here we go:
#1
Jamaipanese has vowed that he will “tame the beast that is the Japanese language”
RisingSunOfNihon might be of some help with his new Japanese language posts
Thomas from NihonHacks.com recommends AllJapaneseAllTheTime, and I agree.
#2
Meme-tagging between JapanNewbie and RockingInHakata
#3
KeepingPaceInJpan and Waikiki2Yanai talk dentists
KeepingPaceInJapan’s post mentions a service called Access Dental Counseling which would be a perfect tip for NihonHacks to cover!By the way, Turner from KeepingPaceInJapan is going in for surgery so why not take a moment to give him an encouraging comment?
Japan-bloggers United Mailing List?
On January 01, 2008 in Community building, Future of the J-web, On the J-web, Suggestions Please
世論
Ken YN over at WhatJapanThinks has been holding a little Japan Blog of the Year Contest and he brought up some really interesting ideas in the comments section of the post.
Ken YN: I’m not very good at this community thing, but I feel that there should be some sort of J-bloggers United mailing list/SNS where we can get to know everyone a bit better, but without getting too incestuous; the blogging about blogging world is really bad for that!I see Japan Probe has a new AdRoll icon; the Japan BlogAds doesn’t sell anything as a unit; could “we†work out a deal with Piqniq, TokyoApartments, etc so they could advertise direct rather than through the AdSense, TLA middlemen? I don’t, but someone like Robert at jp.blognation may have answers.
Having a Japan-bloggers United emailing list or a J-blogger social networking site (SNS) sounds like a great idea to me. What do you guys think? How should we do it?
What Japan Thinks reviews DailyJ - and - yes to the next JapanBlogMatsuri
On December 31, 2007 in Announcements, Community building, JapanBlogMatsuri, On the J-web
Ken YN over at WhatJapanThinks has been reviewing the runners up for the Japan Blog of the Year Award, and DailyJ is “grateful bewildered” to have a place on that list. His review of DailyJ is below.
More importantly, after a bit of childish “Are-we-there-yet?” style nagging, we have word from Ken about possible future J-blog matsuri!
Daily J. This blog is centred around Japan blogger interviews, and is trying to foster, no, make that build a Japanese blogger community, something I feel should exist, and I hope that this Japan Blog of the Year vote has somehow helped towards that goal. Oh yes, and about the Japan Blog Matsuri - I have an alternative yet cunning plan, and I’ll have to talk to you soon regarding one or the other matsuris!
I am sure that Deas from RockingInHakata and Bill at RisingSunOfNihon will be happy to hear that! The credit goes to them for supporting it in the past and talking to DailyJ and others about having more of them.
I don’t know about you, but I am excited already!
When Japan-bloggers put their minds together beautiful things happen - follow up to our interview with JapanBlogList
On December 21, 2007 in Announcements, Blog Improvements, Community building, DailyJ Mission, Future of the J-web, On the J-web
Three heads are better than one.
Chris had a brilliant idea, Shane expanded on it (see below), the JapanBlogList fit the bill perfectly and now…. the ball is rolling to create a “blog search tool” that will let you search all of the Japan-related blogs online!
Nipponster and DailyJ are giving full support to the JapanBlogList project and partnering up with them to create this new search tool.
So from now on you will see an extra tab at the top of DailyJ for the JapanBlogList. And soon (once we do the tech work) our blog search widget will be on their JapanBlogList page so that users can search through all of the blogs on the list.
None of this would have happened without the great feedback from DailyJ readers like Chris and Shane so a BIG thanks to both of you!
Shane S Said, As far as the blogroll goes I think that this is a great idea - why don’t you create a page behind home and about titled Japan blogs and start the list with those that are regular contributors to Daily J and those that you have interviewed. You could then take suggestions or add based on the comments that you got on your previous top Japan Blogs…you could have two columns - one for blogs and one for resources sites like japan-guide.com etc…. Have a great day

Man Down
On December 21, 2007 in Announcements, On the J-web

Turner from Keeping Pace In Japan had a bad bicycle accident and broke his right wrist, I mean, hurt himself while saving some orphans.
(He gives some details of the ordeal and the Japanese O.R. experience).
Why not take a moment to leave him an encouraging comment?
Happenings on the Japan-web
On December 21, 2007 in On the J-web
Mari from Watashi To Tokyo chimed in on the Japanese government’s “Great UFO Debate”
Like Mari, I too believe in the existence of UFOs. They are delicious and can be found in your local convenience store (see video).
RisingSunOfNihon adds a bit more detail to the mix, but says:
“Do you believe in UFOs?
I don’t. No way they exist.
Ask me why. “
Obviously a ramen noodle denier.
