Warning: Nerdy content to follow

uh oh.
This is like a toddler finding the secret stash of sweets!

Today I was file diving in wordpress (the software that powers this blog) looking for a way to fix something and I made a little discovery.

A list of smileys!

As anyone who follows this blog knows, I have a weakness for smileys. So, of course, I have to post them all now to get the excitement out of my system :) <– see what I mean?

So what’s happening on your side of the J-web?

On August 08, 2008 in Uncategorized

whats happeningEven when I was to busy to do DailyJ I had been keeping up some of what was going on around the Japan-related web.

There are some great things happening with the Japansoc community blog and BillyWest’s JapanBlogger.net, and in general it seems like a community is solidifying. Good news indeed!

So, how about it? What’s happening on your side of the Japan-related web?

Are you working on any new projects? Any exciting news?

Japanopedia explained - post #2: Featured projects, featured websites, and some highlights from feedback

On February 11, 2008 in Japanopedia, Uncategorized

Some background in case you are new:

Japanopedia is a project on wikia.com (from the creators of wikipedia). Here are some previous posts about it, more explanation to come.

Hi All.

I should really be on post four or five by now given all the great (and quick) feedback you have given. I need to learn to type in my sleep :D

I have to thank Shane, Nick and Chris for all of their suggestions (and support). I will try to address everything they have brought up. But that will take some work so let’s take it a step at a time.

#1

Shane mentioned highlighting a certain task or a way that people can contribute. An excellent idea. So I started a project to help JapanSoc and made it the “featured project” of the month for Japanopedia.

#2

Nick said:

I appreciate you setting up the JapanSoc project on Japanopedia, but the project that really needs work is Japanopedia itself. We talked before about changing the template/theme/skin, but what about the content? If you click the “Random page” link, you almost always get empty pages…What you need on the front page is some examples of the better, fuller, pages that exist on Japanopedia

So I decided to put a “featured sites” block on the main page with logo style images to a few of the well made pages currently on the site. If you want your page on that block you can go ahead (as long as your page is filled) and add it yourself or ask me and I will add it.

Chris asked for a better logo of Japanopedia that he could use as a button on his site. I am horrible at graphic design so I don’t know how much help I can be with that. What do you think of the small logo at the top of this post? I know the quality isn’t that great.

Slowly but surely, bit by bit Japanopedia ought to build up. It is a project done on a completely voluntary unpaid basis (just like wikipedia) so don’t expect miracles overnight :)

But keep dreaming up ideas and giving feedback anyway. They should all get attention in the long run.

I didn’t have time to make a quality post so I will wait until tomorrow and in the meantime give you a little video from Tofugu.

Why Koichi is embarrassed about the Japan Humour Blog of the Year Victory - an interview with Tofugu

On February 02, 2008 in Interviews, Uncategorized, bloggers

Japan Blog of the yearIf you missed it, yesterday we found out that Tofugu’s mission is to “make interest in Japan cool again”. Today we are back with Koichi taking a look at some of the great content on Tofugu that earned it Best Japan Homour Blog 2007 and why he is embarrassed about it.

Here is some of Koichi’s favourite content related to learning Japanese (good stuff!):

Learn Japanese from Anime in only 5 minutes a day (not)

Beginning Japanese 1: Where do I start
Beginning Japanese 2: Hatsuon is King
Beginnine Japanese 3: Taking steps

DailyJ: Congratulations on becoming the undisputed Best Japan Blog of the Year 2007. But did you have to beat us all so badly? I mean 365 votes, come on! :)

Koichi: I was very embarrassed about that, I really shouldn’t have gotten so many votes, considering how great all the other blogs are, and how much support they have.

The runners up were:

Great blogs all. DailyJ was cheering for Gaijin Tonic (a past interviewee).

Well, that’s all for today. But I have some more Tofugu for you tomorrow when Koichi will tell us a bit about how he got started with the site and other fun (”behind the scenes”) facts.

To all a good day!

What do you think of Taka and Mana?

On December 11, 2007 in Interviews we'd like to do, Rights of foreigners, Uncategorized

As an aside, a few days ago I posted a video about Taka and Mana. I didn’t say much about it in that previous post or ask your opinions so I wanted to talk about it again. Taka and Mana are two young children who were abducted by their Japanese mother from their Canadian father.

Basically, under Japanese law there is little recourse in these disputes for the non-Japanese parent. Japan is one of the few major countries where this is the case. From what I have gathered, even in a normal divorce/custody battle (w/o an abduction), custody is given exclusively to the Japanese parent. Taka and Mana’s father is making a documentary about the issue and there is an article with more details on Debito.org.

Here is the trailer to the documentary:

What do you think about this? Leave a comment.

little things

On November 21, 2007 in Suggestions Please, Uncategorized

I updated the blogroll and added the recent interviewees (sorry I took a little while to update that guys)

Seeing as it is not a regular blogroll, where we just add links all willy nilly nilly, but links to past interviewees’ sites I am thinking about renaming it “interviewee roll”

what do you think?
